Keypad Installation Process

In an effort to provide full transparency, here’s an inside look at our installation process:

1. Choosing Your Keypad

Not all keypads are compatible with all garage door openers. You have to make sure that any option you consider will integrate with any opener model you have installed, unless you’re looking to update the entire system (which we can help with!).

You can find out about compatibility through the manufacturer. Our well-trained team members are also often able to give you viable recommendations based on your setup.

2. Choosing a Location

Choosing the correct location for your keypad is very important. It is a “key-pad,” after all, which means it needs to be easily accessible to you, but not obvious to others. We recommend choosing an exterior wall near the garage that doesn’t get much sunlight.

3. Installing Batteries

Installing batteries before mounting the keypad allows us to ensure we’re not about to drill holes for a malfunctioning garage door keypad. Our technicians will test things such as signal strength before setting anything in stone.

4. Marking Mounting Holes

Marking the mounting holes has to come before drilling so that we can make sure everything is level. Additionally, many keypads come with a mounting bracket, which makes the installation service quicker and easier.

5. Drilling Holes

Safety is our chief concern, not only for the people involved, but also for your house! We use the right tools and extra caution when drilling. We also want everything to pass a safety inspection, which means paying special attention to electrical wiring and hole depth.

6. Mounting the Keypad

Once the keypad is aligned with the drilled holes, we’ll scre it in place. After checking that everything is in place and not wobbly, that ends the manual labor side of things.

7. Programming the Keypad

All that’s left is to program the keypad! Our technicians will handle that, but should you need to do it for some reason, here’s a general idea of what that looks like:

  • There will either be a “Learn” or “Program” button on the unit. (It’s usually on the back or side.) Press and hold that button until a light turns on.

  • Enter the new security code.

  • Press “Enter” and watch for a flash from the light or a click from the opener. This will indicate that your code was accepted

  • Test the new code by closing the garage door and using the code to open it.

Theoretically, it should work the first time. If it doesn’t, no worries! That’s why you have a professional garage door company that offers great service at competitive prices.

How to Choose the Right Type of Keypad

Your goals probably include these four things: Reliability, security, performance, and easy maintenance.

You could also tag on things such as comfortable price tag, compatibility, long-lasting batteries, smart features, and much more.

Whatever you’re looking for, it’s important to know that there are two main types of keypads: wired and non-wired.

Wired keypads eliminate battery issues and offer unparalleled stability. There aren’t any performance issues related to communication since everything is hardwired in.

Wireless keypads are typically more flexible and have more features.

Your choice depends on your garage door needs. If your top priority is security and reliability, wired is probably for you. If you want convenience and extra features, wireless might be your pick.

Our experts can help walk you through this process so that you feel informed and confident in your decision.
