Locating the PID, serial, or model number on a garage door is a good way to save time when ordering the right replacement parts, new springs, or arranging repairs. Technicians will use these numbers to identify the exact model you have and verify its original specs to ensure they order the correct parts.

With most manufacturers, you will find an identification label of some sort on the interior surface of the door. However, where exactly that is will be dictated by the make, model, and age of the unit.

The Bottom Panel is the Best Place to Start

Make your way inside the garage with the door shut and look at the interior of the bottom panel. Check the lower corners on both the left and right-hand sides. The sticker could be on the panel itself or on the edge where two sections come together. You may want to put on a flashlight in case the label is faded, dusty, or running into the finish of the door.

You are looking for a manufacturer’s sticker with the model and serial numbers, the PID, date of manufacture, dimensions, and perhaps even the warranty or material information. While the model number gives you the general type of door, the serial number tells the specifics of that particular unit. It is indispensable for matching hinges and panels, or in the event of a manufacturer’s warranty claim.

Clopay Garage Doors

On a Clopay, you will generally see the label on the inside, near the bottom, or along a section edge. Newer doors tend to have a white Clopay sticker at the end of the bottom panel, whereas older ones might have a blue or yellow label, but it all depends on the specific door. Some older models have a 15- or 16-digit serial number on the interior bottom section to identify the model. More recent labels can have a longer PID. Since the size and model info can be part of that number, it is best to take a photo of the whole label instead of transcribing only a portion of it; that way, you or your technician can quickly identify what they need to know to get the correct replacement parts.

Wayne Dalton and Other Makes

You’re likely to find the information you’re looking for on the top door panel on a Wayne Dalton door. The label is usually in the center or one of the upper corners of this door section. Be sure to check around any windows or struts, but do not mistake it for the number on the opener; those are separate garage door systems.

If you don’t find a sticker on the panels, try the side railings or vertical tracks. Some garage door manufacturers put them at eye level or near the bottom of the track. Ideal garage doors sometimes have them on the end of the sections themselves. Just be careful to keep your hands away from rollers, cables, springs, and other pinch points while you are looking.

If the Label Is Not There

Labels on older garage door models can be damaged beyond readability or simply gone. In that case, check over any service records or warranty papers for the relevant numbers. If that also fails, measure the height, width, and thickness of the panels and the individual sections. A clear set of photos of the exterior, the style of the window, and any logo will give an experienced company what they need to figure out compatible parts. NuLift Garage Doors is happy to help homeowners in Parker and other Colorado communities with this process, ensuring safe and efficient repairs.
